Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 is Official

Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) and Galaxy Nexus are Official

Google just released the lastest build of the Android operating system on the just announced Galaxy Nexus, Ice Cream Sandwich.  The phone is a beautiful device with a curved design then measures in at only 8.94mm thick.  It has a gorgeous 4.65in HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280 x 720.  It's running a 1.2GHz dual-core processor with a 5 megapixel rear camera (1080p video recording) and 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera for video chat.  Also comes with Bluetooth, Wifi, and Near Face Communication (NFC).  The Galaxy Nexus packs a 1750mAH battery.  There is by a LTE and HSPA+ versions of the phone. Which means it should be on the the carries soon since Sprint is switching to LTE next year.

Check out this link from Engadget talking more about the phone:

Now about Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS).  The newest version of Android looks amazing.  Its UI is very relaxed and slik. Here are some quick bullets about ICS (Engadget):
  • Option to use virtual buttons in the UI, instead of taking up capacitive touch buttons
  • Widgets are in a new tab, listed in a similar list to apps
  • Folders are much easier to create, with a drag-and-drop style similar to iOS
  • A customizable launcher
  • New phone app with visual voicemail functionality that lets you speed up or slow down voicemail messages
  • Pinch-to-zoom functionality in the calendar
  • Gmail has offline search, a two-line preview, and new action bar at the bottom
  • Swipe left or right to switch between Gmail conversations
  • Integrated screenshot capture by holding power and volume down buttons
  • Improved error correction on the keyboard
  • Ability to access apps directly from lock screen
  • Improved copy and paste
  • Better voice integration
  • Face Unlock, a facial recognition service
  • New tabbed web browser, allowing up to 16 tabs
  • Browser now automatically syncs your Chrome bookmarks
  • Modern Robot font
  • Data Usage section in settings lets you set warnings when you reach a certain amount of use and disabling data when you go over your limit
  • Ability to kill off apps that are using data in the background
  • Camera app: zero shutter lag, time lapse settings, zoom while recording
  • Built-in photo editor
  • Ability to shot panoramic photos
  • New gallery layout, organized by location and person
  • Refreshed people app with social network integration, status updates and hi-res images
  • Android Beam, a NFC feature that lets you exchange websites, contact info, directions, YouTube, etc.

My Thoughts:

My favorite features would have to include the new folders, the improved notifications, photo editing, new camera features, and Android Beam. Starting with the folders. I think the new folders are much simpler then in the past. Opens up in smaller bubble and can rearrange with easy. The new notification system is even better then ever. You can now delete individual notifications by swiping left or right to discard them. Also you can access the pull down notification bar well in the unlock screen, I love that feature. The photo editing is now built into the gallery/camera application, which will become really useful. With the new camera, which captures images and shoots in 1080p can also capture panoramic photos. The final feature I'll talk about that I like is Android Beam. It is similar to the app "Bump" but uses the NFC chip inside the phone. If someone has a location on a map you can put the phones back to back and map location will open on the opposite phone. Can also do this with a game someone is playing. Instead of looking up the game in the Market you can use Android Beam to take you right to the Market with the game ready to download. There are many other amazing features just those are some that stood out to me during the presentation. Check the screenshots below about ICS.

I can't wait till this comes out. Wondering when it will come out? They said it will be released world wide in November but with no specific date. Most likely going to be early in the month the date I have been hearing was November 10th.
